Unfortunately, if someone steals your Social Security number and uses it to get a job then that person’s wages, work conduct, and other information are reported to the government and other record collections. However, if you have Self Lock and a thief attempts to use your Social Security number to gain employment with a company enrolled in E-Verify, the company will receive notice of an error called a Tentative Nonconfirmation in E-Verify.
E-Verify is used at over 2 million work sites. If you are 16 years of age or older and authorized to work in the United States (including if you are a non-citizen), you can use Self Lock. Even if you are retired, temporarily out of work, or have not yet entered the job market, someone could still try to use your Social Security number to get a job. The great news is that you can lock and unlock your Social Security number at any time. If you are about to apply for a new job, simply unlock your number to avoid a Tentative Nonconfirmation. After you get the job, you can then re-lock it to continue protecting your identity. Your Self Lock stays active for one year and you can renew it after that.
